Andrew is a lifelong scientist and seasoned entrepreneur recognized for his ability to transform fundamental scientific discoveries into real-world innovations. He is known for pioneering research advances in the life sciences and co-founding multiple technology, biotechnology and healthcare startups, playing pivotal roles in corporate growth, strategic investments and executive leadership. He has led the strategic development and execution of corporate R&D programs, manufacturing processes and quality system operations. Andrew also actively supports other emerging companies in life sciences as an advisor, consultant, and angel investor. Andrew's journey began in art school, where he learned to pursue bold ideas despite the risk of failure and discomfort of exploring uncharted paths. His love for math and biology eventually led him to a BSc at the University of Toronto (1997-2001), followed by a PhD at UCLA (2001-2005), and postdoctoral work at the University College London (2005-2008). In 2008, he joined the University of Ottawa, where he founded the 'Pelling Lab for Augmented Biology,' gaining global attention for research on plant-derived biomaterials for tissue engineering. As co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Spiderwort Inc., Andrew spearheaded R&D efforts to commercialize plant-based biomaterials for medical use, guiding the company through clinical and regulatory challenges. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, a member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada, and recognition as a Canada Research Chair and TED Senior Fellow. His contributions have also been covered extensively in the international media (Wired, New York Times and the BBC etc). As a highly sought-after keynote speaker, Andrew has delivered hundreds of talks on innovation for major clients such as Bayer, Google, RedBull and Marriott, and advises various community, industry, and government organizations. Andrew now takes an active role in supporting the wider scientific startup community as an active mentor at the Creative Destruction Lab, an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and advisor to venture capital firms and government investment bodies.
