Anita Li

Journalism expert specializing in news products, audience engagement, media business models, innovation, DEI and ethics

I’m excited by the possibilities that this era of disruption will herald for the media industry. As someone with a proven track record of success at legacy and emerging media outlets across North America, my approach to journalism combines the best of both worlds. That's why I:

• Embrace new storytelling formats and approaches (e.g. AI, VR, collaborative media, solutions journalism, etc.), while maintaining a strong foundation in the basics of quality journalism: attentive listening and fact-based reporting

• Understand how to work well with newsroom colleagues of all ages, having effectively managed younger generations, and trained older generations in new editorial tools

• Thrive most in innovative environments that break down silos and take calculated risks (I excel in hybrid editorial-business or "bridge" roles, which are increasingly becoming the norm in journalism)

I'm a multi-platform journalist with over two decades of experience in both the editorial and business sides of media, including management-level positions. Currently, I'm the publisher and editor-in-chief of The Green Line, an award-winning hyperlocal and community-driven outlet that investigates the way we live to help Torontonians survive and thrive in a rapidly changing city.

I'm also focused on consulting media clients and teaching at journalism schools such as the City University of New York and Toronto Metropolitan University, after working in three major media markets across North America: Toronto, New York City and Ottawa.

I started out my career as a reporter and editor at establishment Canadian publications, including The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail and CBC. After that, I worked in strategic roles at American digital media outlets, such as Complex, Mashable and Fusion. I was then director of communities at The Discourse, a disruptive player in the Canadian media scene that fills in gaps in news coverage for underserved communities.

Given my unique background, I’ve established myself as an industry leader and expert in community-driven journalism, audience engagement, media business models, journalism products, newsroom diversity, media ethics and journalism innovation; I’ve spoken on these topics in press interviews and at conferences worldwide.
