Berend previously was a research scientist at Inverted AI, before which he was a postdoc at the University of British Columbia working with Frank Wood and Trevor Campbell. He received his PhD in Physics at the University of British Columbia, after completing a Masters in Physics cum laude from the University of Amsterdam for which he was awarded the Pieter Zeeman Prize.

His research contributions include work on multi agent behavioral models, permutation invariance in generative modeling and score based generative models. 

He is based in Vancouver where in his free time he climbs, runs and enjoys riding motorcycles to remote places.
