Jonathan C. Poling

Jonathan C. Poling is a partner at Akin and Practice Group Leader for the International Trade Section of the firm. He has significant experience handling national security, money laundering, fraud, and export control, sanctions and trade-related investigations and prosecutions. He is ranked nationally by Chambers in export controls and sanctions.

He regularly handles cross border enforcement matters before the U.S. Departments of Justice, State, Treasury and Commerce, including investigations involving voluntary disclosures and multijurisdictional matters, including in the EU, US, Middle East and China.

Mr. Poling has also served as an Independent Monitor for the World Bank and companies participating in the World Bank's voluntary disclosure program, counsel to an Independent Monitor of a large financial institution and a special compliance officer for a major defense contractor under consent agreeenent with the U.S. Department of State.

He is a former federal prosecutor with the US Department of Justice National Security Division and Special Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. In 2009, Mr. Poling was awarded the Assistant Attorney General for National Security Division’s Special Commendation Award and in 2010 he was awarded the US Department of Commerce, Office of Export Enforcement Award for Excellence. He also received the National Security Division's Award for Excellence in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He prosecuted at the time the largest sanctions case in US history, the largest export control case, the first arrest and conviction of a freight forwarder for sanctions violations, and the first case to result in the successful arrest, extradition and conviction of defendants charged with export control and sanctions violations involving IED components to Iraq through Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions and export control laws.

He also served on the Department of Justice’s Foreign Investment Review Staff, which participates on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) review process.

Prior to his time with the Department of Justice, Mr. Poling worked as a litigation associate with Milbank handling a wide array of commercial litigation, arbitrations and internal corporate investigations. In 2008 he was awarded a commendation from NASA for his work with the Hon. William H. Webster, Milbank partner and former Director of the CIA and FBI, on a matter relating to the Space Shuttle Columbia accident.
