Nazanin Alavi

Co-psychiatrist in Chief, Queen's University, Co- Program Medical Director, Kingston Health Sciences Centre

For the past two decades, my research has focused on developing innovative solutions to enhance accessibility and effectiveness in mental health care. My journey began in 2007 when I immigrated to Canada and joined the Mood Research Lab at Queen’s University. Witnessing the challenges immigrants faced in accessing mental health care inspired me to pioneer online psychotherapy solutions tailored to diverse populations. This journey reached a significant milestone with the creation of OPTT (Online Psychotherapy Tool), a secure platform integrating data-driven practices and AI algorithms, recognized globally for its impact on mental health care delivery. Joining the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and later Queen’s University, I established an academic online psychotherapy lab, supervising a diverse team of trainees. I'm deeply invested in shaping the future of mental health education, facilitating workshops, teaching courses, and spearheading initiatives to optimize clinical training. My clinical work centres on emergency psychiatry and ambulatory general psychiatry, where I've championed initiatives to improve access and quality of care. I remain an active clinician while fulfilling administrative roles as Program Medical Director and division chair at Queen’s University. My leadership philosophy revolves around fostering positive change and resilience in the face of challenges.
