Director Pain Services at Toronto General Hospital
Director of Pain Services, and Medical Director of the Pain Research Unit at the Toronto General Hospital, and Staff Anesthesiologist at the University Health Network. PhD in Clinical Investigation, earned from the Institute of Medical Science of the University of Toronto.
Co-founder of the Rouge Valley Hyperbaric Medical Centre, and currently studying the outcomes of the use of Hyperbaric Medicine.
Awarded the Canadian Pain Society Early Career Research Award, and nationally recognized for my research productivity, as well as improvements made to patient care through the founding of the Transitional Pain Program.
My research interests include evaluating the efficacy of preventive analgesia, identifying novel acute pain treatments following major surgery, identifying the factors involved in the transition of acute postsurgical pain into chronic pain, studying the genetics of acute and chronic pain after surgery, and identifying risk factors associated with continued opioid use and poor health related to quality of life after major surgery.
I have also played a leading role in educating the Canadian public about pain control, risk factors for chronic opioid use, alternatives to opioids as a pioneering strategy at TGH, misconceptions about opioid use, and the need for further studies on understanding the beneficial and adverse effects of cannabis. I have been a champion of evidence-based solutions for the opioid crisis and a national pain and addictions strategy.
