Jennifer Johnston

Jennifer Johnston, MD, CCFP, DipABLM, is a family physician who’s practiced medicine in Nova Scotia for over a decade. She’s seen firsthand how hormone contraception can wreak havoc on patients' health and wellbeing.

She's also a patient herself, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021.  She discovered her twenty year history taking hormonal contraception may have contributed to her own diagnosis.

After Jennifer had her fourth child, she realized she needed some highly effective birth control.  Looking at her options, she did not want the added risk of blood clots from hormones, nor did she like the side effects of condoms or IUDs.  Wait times for a vasectomy or tubal ligation were in the realm of years and the rhythm and withdrawal methods touted a whopping 20-25% failure rate.

Enter: The Better Ring. Jennifer is now determined to give women more choice, more agency and more health for years to come.  She's developing a solution so young women like her own daughters never have to choose between contraception and protecting their health.
