Ideal Timing for Packing Your Hospital Bag
Aim to have your hospital bag organized and ready by the 36th or 37th week of pregnancy, to be prepared for any early labor signs.
While it's okay to add a few last-minute items like your toothbrush, it's best to have your bag mostly packed and within easy reach as you near the end of your pregnancy.
Certain items are indispensable (like a car seat), while others offer comfort and a touch of home. We've gathered insights from Bobo parents and our own childbirth experiences to compile this comprehensive list.
What to Include in Your Hospital Bag
Start by packing personal items for yourself to ensure comfort during and after labor.
Comfortable clothing. Postpartum comfort is key, so choose loose-fitting clothes. Opt for supportive bras but avoid overly tight garments. Consider nursing bras or tanks if you plan to breastfeed, paired with soft pants or lightweight sleepwear. For water labor, pack a dark sports bra or swim top. Choose grippy socks for warmth and slip-on shoes like Birkenstocks or flip-flops for swollen feet. A robe. A cozy robe is invaluable, whether you have a vaginal birth or a C-section.
Personal care items. Pack essentials like a hairbrush, shampoo (regular or dry), toothbrush and paste, deodorant, lip balm, body lotion, extra hair ties, and face wipes. Don't forget contact lenses and solution or glasses if needed.
Your birth plan. Print several copies of your birth plan for your medical team and to display in your room. Highlight key points for easy reference.
An extra-long phone charger . Bobo parents highly recommend this, as hospital outlets are often far from beds.
Snacks and beverages. Bring a reusable water bottle, electrolyte drinks, and easy snacks like granola bars and dried fruit.
Pillows and a bath towel. Hospital towels and pillows are often less comfortable, so bringing your own can add to your comfort.
Nipple cream. Essential for breastfeeding mothers.
Postpartum care items. Consider adult diapers or reusable postpartum underwear for comfort. Perineal spray and a postpartum recovery kit can also be helpful.
Portable Bluetooth speaker and music playlist. Music can be soothing during labor, so prepare a lengthy playlist.
Optional items: Some parents recommend a diffuser, portable fan, or nursing pillow for added comfort.
