Electrans Technologies

Solutions to improve operational and energy efficiency in the transportation industry.

Electrans Technologies Ltd. is a Canadian company focusing on the future of commercial vehicles in the transportation industry, by leveraging the company’s technical expertise in robotics, power management, and electric vehicle design combined with data analytics and intelligent software to generate operational efficiency improvements and cost savings for the fleet operators. Electrans is currently developing an automated coupling solution to enable the automatic connection between the tractor and the trailer. The solution replaces the human operator and incorporate advanced communication protocols between the tractor and the trailer, therefore enabling a fully autonomous operation of the tractor-trailer for the transportation industry. Additionally, Electrans has developed a proof of concept patented electric converter dolly that transform a road train with a conventional engine into a hybrid electric powertrain, thereby reducing the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle operation

We are a startup company working on patent-pending hybrid-electric drive solutions in the commercial vehicle industry. We are well-funded by both private investment and government support, working on exciting new technologies to build a cleaner and greener tomorrow.

Our team consists of seasoned veterans and highly-trained professionals in the field who are committed to making our world a better place, one step at a time.

Electrans Technologies Ltd. (ETL) was founded in 2017 by Brian Layfield following a feasibility study conducted by the University of Waterloo in 2016. The Waterloo study demonstrated that an electric convertor dolly could deliver fuel consumption reduction of a tractor in double trailers configuration. Following incorporation in April 2017, ETL established its operations at the UW’s Accelerator Centre’s inaugural clean tech incubator.

In April 2018, ETL received a Low Carbon Innovation Fund (LCIF) grant from the Government of Ontario to fund technology validation and facilitate commercialization of the electric dolly technology. ETL moved to its current office location at 131 George Street in Oakville, Ontario at the end of 2018 and began low-volume prototyping and assembly.
