Material Futures

Everyday Recoloured

Material Futures uses synthetic biology to produce sustainable pigments. By isolating microorganisms from natural sources, we optimize the production of colourants in microbial hosts. This method replaces traditional, resource-intensive production with a cleaner, scalable alternative for industries such as food, cosmetics, and textiles, ensuring a sustainable supply of eco-friendly colorants while minimizing environmental impact.

Material Futures was founded by Iris Redinger, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for sustainability and innovation. Iris began her career in real estate development, managing large-scale projects in Toronto, but her desire to make a meaningful impact on the environment led her to launch Material Futures in 2019. The company’s journey started with a focus on creating sustainable, natural colorants from microbial fermentation. Recognizing the harmful environmental effects of synthetic dyes, Iris and her team sought to engineer microorganisms that could produce vibrant pigments derived from nature.
